Forensic pathology is a specific branch of medicine that focuses on determining the cause of death by examining a corpse. A post mortem is performed by a medical examiner, usually during the investigation of criminal law cases and civil law cases in some jurisdictions, the principles and knowledge of medicine and related sciences to problems that concern the general public and related legal issues. A forensic pathologist is a physician with specialized medical and forensic science training and knowledge. In practice, forensic pathologists concentrate closely on the understanding of types and causation of injuries and causes of sudden and unnatural death. The roles of the forensic pathologists includes examination of the death scene, conducting forensic autopsies (forensic autopsies have a different focus than that of hospital autopsies conducted in cases of natural death), reviewing medical records, interpretation of toxicology and other laboratory studies, certification of the cause of death and manner of death, and testifying in criminal and civil court proceedings.
